He became Prime Minister of India for three times- in 1996 for 13 days, the second time in 19 for 13 months and then in 1999 for a full 5-year term.

Arrested by British Government

In 1942, he, along with his elder brother, Prem, was arrested for 23 days for participating in the Quit India Movement against the British government.

A Great Poet

Atal Bihari Vajpayee poems will be missed badly. He is considered one of the finest Hindi-poets in India and in an interview, he revealed that he had no interest in politics and would always like to be a poet.

Drooped Out of college

He dropped out of law school to become a joint editor of the RSS magazine ‘Rashtradharma’. He also became the editor of the weekly paper ‘Panchajanya’ run by the Sangh.

He did Cooking in jail

During the Emergency, he, along with other opposition leaders, was imprisoned in Bangalore Central Jail. He took care of food preparation for his inmates as cooking was one of his enduring passions.

In 1977, as an External Affairs Minister in Morarji Desai government, when he entered the office of Ministry of External Affairs, he found the portrait of Jawaharlal Nehru was missing. He immediately ordered his staff to bring it back.

Accused of being Nehru’s Planted man

The then Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru was extremely fond of Vajpayee, despite the latter being from the rival political party. Nehru often used to introduce him to foreign guests and invite him to receptions thrown in honor of the visiting dignitaries. Balraj Madhok, the former president of Jan Sangh, accused Vajpayee of being Nehru’s planted man in the opposition.

Suffered the stroke

His health started deteriorating after 2005. In 2005, He announced his retirement from active politics. Later he suffered a stroke in 2009 which weakened his speech

Bharat Ratana Award

On December 25, 2014, Government of India honored him with India’s highest Civilian Award – Bharat Ratna. The then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, presented him the award at his residence on March 27, 2015.
